Finding inclusive educational opportunities for Spanish-speaking students can sometimes be very difficult. Lenoir Community College\u2019s Centro Educativo Latino aims to fill in the gaps left open by traditional educational venues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlos Cotto, Associate Dean of Workforce Development and Latino Programs, leads the Centro Educativo Latino. \u201cThe goal of the center is to provide programs and courses offered in Spanish for the Spanish-speaking community,\u201d Cotto said. \u201cThis leads to better employment opportunities in the current workforce.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Centro Educativo Latino houses a wide range of classes offered in Spanish. These include classes such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Commercial Refrigeration, Welding, Auto Mechanics, Electro Mechanics, Energy Distribution Systems, and Residential Electricity. The Center also houses cosmetic classes such as Cosmetology, Nail Technician, Esthetics, and Natural Hair Care. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are also offered for those interested in learning English.<\/span><\/p>\n

Class lengths range based on the skills being pursued. Centro Educativo Latino is committed to providing educational opportunities to as many students as possible, so weekend and evening classes are available along with typical weekday classes. Classes usually have around 15-25 students.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently, the center has nearly 700 students taking classes,\u201d Cotto said. \u201cWe are serving not just Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties. We have served students from South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia as well.\u201d The Center has close to 70 ongoing classes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Cotto finds that Centro Educativo Latino has been an extremely rewarding program. \u201cThe Latino Center is like the gift that keeps on giving,\u201d he said. \u201cFor the longest time, the Latino community never had an opportunity to grow intellectually in a higher education environment. In the past two years, we have served nearly 2,000 students, which has opened doors into the socio-economic cycle they have been living in, but did not feel accepted in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cotto credits the Latino Center\u2019s success to the instructors, coordinators, directors, and administrative assistants that serve as the backbone of the Center. \u201cI feel that LCC has gained a hard-working Latino team that makes us second to none.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Centro Educativo Latino ofrece oportunidades para estudiantes de habla hispana<\/span><\/h2>\n

En ocasiones puede ser dif\u00edcil para muchos encontrar oportunidades educativas que sean inclusivas para estudiantes de habla hispana. El Centro Educativo Latino de Lenoir Community College tiene como objetivo llenar los vac\u00edos que dejan los lugares educativos tradicionales.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlos Cotto, Decano Asociado de Desarrollo de Fuerza Laboral y Programas Latinos, dirige el Centro Educativo Latino. \u201cEl objetivo del Centro es brindar programas y cursos ofrecidos en espa\u00f1ol para la comunidad Latina,\u201d dijo Cotto. \u201cEsto conduce a mejores oportunidades de empleo en la fuerza laboral actual.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

El Centro Educativo Latino alberga una amplia selecci\u00f3n de clases que se ofrecen en espa\u00f1ol.\u00a0 Esto incluye clases de calefacci\u00f3n, ventilaci\u00f3n y aire acondicionado (HVAC), refrigeraci\u00f3n comercial, soldadura, mec\u00e1nica automotriz, electromec\u00e1nica, sistemas de distribuci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda y electricidad residencial, entre otras. El Centro tambi\u00e9n ofrece clases de cosmetolog\u00eda, t\u00e9cnico de u\u00f1as, est\u00e9tica y cuidado natural de cabello. Tambi\u00e9n se ofrecen clases de ingl\u00e9s como segundo idioma (ESL) para aquellos interesados \u200b\u200ben aprender ingl\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n

La duraci\u00f3n de las clases var\u00eda seg\u00fan las destrezas que se quieren lograr. El Centro Educativo Latino se compromete en brindar oportunidades educativas a tantos estudiantes como sea posible. Por esta raz\u00f3n, tenemos disponibles clases nocturnas y de fin de semana, al igual que las clases durante la semana. Las clases tienen una capacidad de unos 15 a 25 estudiantes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cActualmente, el Centro Educativo Latino tiene cerca de 700 estudiantes tomando clases,\u201d dijo Cotto.\u00a0 \u201cEstamos sirviendo no solo a los condados de Lenoir, Greene y Jones, pero tambi\u00e9n hemos atendido a estudiantes de Carolina del Sur, Georgia y Virginia.\u201d Al final de este a\u00f1o acad\u00e9mico el Centro Educativo Latino habr\u00e1 ofrecido unas 70 clases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cotto explica que el Centro Educativo Latino ha sido un programa extremadamente gratificante.\u00a0 \u201cEl Centro Educativo Latino es como el regalo que sigue dando\u201d, dijo. \u201cDurante mucho tiempo, la comunidad latina no hab\u00eda tenido la oportunidad y el acceso a crecer profesionalmente en un espacio de educaci\u00f3n superior. En los \u00faltimos dos a\u00f1os, hemos atendido a cerca de 2,000 estudiantes, lo que les ha abierto las puertas a participar m\u00e1s en el entorno socioecon\u00f3mico en el que han estado viviendo, pero en el que no se sent\u00edan aceptados.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
