{"id":72,"date":"2021-04-14T20:10:21","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T20:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lenoircc.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2021-volume-1-issue-1\/making-history\/"},"modified":"2021-06-07T21:58:34","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T21:58:34","slug":"making-history-during-a-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lenoircc.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2021-volume-1-issue-1\/making-history-during-a-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Making history during a pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">By Mallory Kennedy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Lenoir Community College senior Medical Assisting students did not know that they would soon be a part of making history when they first enrolled in the program just months before a global pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Just a few weeks into the second semester, COVID-19 totally changed how Program Chair Rebecca Dail taught her medical assisting students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cLike many others, we had to adapt and overcome obstacles so that my students were given the education they needed to be successful medical assistants upon graduation,\u201d\u00a0 Dail said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Medical Assisting students are required to complete clinical rotations as part of their curriculum. After Dail\u2019s students completed their rotations with UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, they opened up a vaccine clinic and were needing trained personnel to help administer the vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cThis was a great opportunity for my students to not only be a part of history but to gain experience building communication skills and working with a team in a high-pressure environment,\u201d Dail said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Senior year students Cassidy Winfield and Gwendolyn Edgeston were some of those who helped administer the vaccine to members of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cI feel honored to know I was a part of making history,\u201d\u00a0 Winfield said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cKnowing I was part of a team that was working to help make a difference in the world is a humbling feeling,\u201d Edgeston added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cBeing a student in the healthcare field during a pandemic was a lot to handle in the beginning.
